PBL Course Content 10/11

WELCOME,

Project Based Learning (PBL) is an alternative opportunity for students in Grades 10 and 11 to achieve their graduation course requirement credits. PBL will run both semesters, all morning or afternoon, dependant on time allocation. PBL gives students an opportunity to have a high school experience that is unique to them based around student-centered curriculum and activities. Students must take ownership in their own learning and being intrinsically motivated is an asset within this program.

Grade 10 students will focus on the following core courses required for graduation: Science 10, Creative Writing and New  Media 10, Career Ed 10 and Social Studies 10. Within the program, we try to emphasize differentiated learning, allowing the students to master materials in a variety of ways. For example, as students learn concepts around chemistry, they will also have opportunities to learn through laboratory studies. In Social Studies, students will integrate concepts from Career Ed 10 and Language Arts 10, such as resume writing and short story analysis, into creating a "resume" for one of the many influential figureheads of the Canadian West exploration and settlement.

Core curriculum that the Grade 11 students will focus on is Social Studies Explorations 11, Creative Writing and New Media 11, Biology 11 as well as Leadership 11. Students have an opportunity within these core courses to develop certain techniques that they may never have had a chance to develop. For example, to wrap up a unit on World War I, the students will participate in a mock Paris Peace Conference, representing a country that was involved in the war. Students need to investigate potential treaties as well as provide support for their requested reparations.
